Building Culturally Competent Care for America's Vulnerable Populations
This article: Empowering Dental Assistants Through Volunteering, examines volunteerism as both an educational and social strategy in the training of Oral Health Technicians (Brazil) and Dental Assistants (United States).
Drawing on Kolb’s experiential learning theory, Campinha-Bacote’s cultural competence model, and the concept of intersectionality, it integrates a systematic literature review with eight years of practical volunteer experience in multicultural contexts. The findings highlight how volunteerism enhances technical, ethical, and intercultural competencies, facilitates the integration of immigrant professionals, and contributes to health equity.
The study proposes recommendations for incorporating volunteer activities into oral health curricula, recognizing volunteerism as a transformative pedagogical tool and a pathway toward social justice in healthcare.
